A few words from Kevin Gibbin, our new President. (Sept 2010)

Dear Member

It was a great privilege to be asked to become President of Nottingham and Notts Photographic Society, a Society with a great heritage and tradition. It is therefore with a great sense of pride that I welcome you to the 2010 – 11 season of the Society and the Programme of lectures and other events organised for the year ahead. In welcoming you I would like also to pay tribute to my immediate predecessor Dan Billings for what I am sure you will agree has been an extremely successful two years as our President.

I hope you will concur that the list of visiting lecturers for the coming season represents some of the best photographic talent in the country and, coupled with several initiatives provides the potential for an exciting year for us all. In addition to a number of speakers who have previously visited us it is a great pleasure to welcome some new faces.

In addition to the visiting lecturers I am pleased to welcome the input from the members, not only on the skills days but in several of the evening activities including a members’ night as well as talks from two of our members. I am absolutely delighted to announce that the speaker for the President’s evening will be Rosamund Macfarlane, a former member and star of the Society.

It is a particular pleasure to announce at the beginning of our year the details of the two “Big Nights”; in January we will have Niall Benvie, an outstanding wildlife photographer coming and in May Colin Prior, long one of my photographic heroes, is the Big Night Lecturer.

In addition to the Saturday skills days we have two days when the Society is able to offer members the chance of time with two of our visiting experts, David Rowley and Niall Benvie, both full-day sessions. I hope this will be an initiative which is repeated in future years.

No Society can function without considerable input from its organising Committee and I am most grateful to all who work so diligently on behalf of the membership to keep NNPS at the forefront of Photography. It would be invidious to single out any one Committee member as all contribute so much to the running of the Society; I extend to them my personal thanks and also thanks on behalf of the whole membership.

I look forward to sharing with you the excitement of the new Nottingham and Notts Photographic Season.

Kevin Gibbin
